Sorting and Ranking

The Sorting and Ranking options in the Format Pane allow you to organize and prioritize the data displayed in the visual for better clarity and focus.

How to Use Sorting

Sorting is available for all types of views, enabling you to define the order in which items appear in the visual.

1. Access the Sorting Option:

Navigate to the Sort option in the Format Pane.

2. Select Sorting Criteria:

  • A dropdown list is provided under sort by, showing all data fields added under Category and Others.

  • Fields added to Category are displayed as "Category" in the dropdown.

  • Fields added to Others are displayed by their names.

3. Choose Sorting Order:

  • After selecting a field, a new option, Sort As, becomes available.

  • Use the dropdown to select either Ascending or Descending order.

  • When a data field from the "Others" section is selected for sorting, sorting option becomes available in the visual's user interface.

  • The data in the visual is sorted based on your selection.

  • Example: Sort sales data by categories in ascending order to group items alphabetically.

4. Absolute Sort:

  • The Absolute Sort option allows users to sort items based on their absolute values when enabled.

  • This ensures that the sorting is done purely based on the absolute value of the data, providing a clear and consistent order regardless of the original sign (positive or negative).

  • This option is available only when sorting criteria is selected as Measure or Numeric datatype.

How to Use Ranking:

1. Enable Ranking:

  • Use the toggle button in the Format Pane to enable Ranking.

  • Note: Enabling Ranking will disable Sorting.

2. Set Top/Bottom N Type:

  • A dropdown is provided to choose between Top N and Bottom N rankings.

3. Specify N Value:

  • Use the input box with up and down arrows to define the number of items to rank.

  • Example: Top 10, Bottom 5.

4. Select Top N Measure:

  • A dropdown list displays the measures added to the Others field.

  • Choose a measure to rank items based on its value.

Example: Display the Top 10 Products by revenue in a Facet View to highlight the most profitable items.
