e.Hierarchical data Support

In Power BI, a hierarchy organizes data into multiple levels, such as Year → Quarter → Month → Day or Country → State → City, enabling users to drill down and analyze information at varying depths. This functionality is also supported in the Super Filter visual, which allows users to expand and collapse hierarchy levels directly within the filter, making it easy to switch between high-level summaries and detailed breakdowns while applying filters at any level.

Steps to configure and use hierarchical data in a filter:

1

Add Hierarchy Data

  • When hierarchy data (e.g., Dates) is added to a chart, it appears as a hierarchy with an expand/collapse icon.

  • By default, the hierarchy is displayed in an expanded state.

2

Locate the Expand/Collapse Icon

  • The top level of the hierarchy includes an icon in the top-right corner of the panel, represented by arrow marks.

3

Collapse the Hierarchy

  • Click the collapse icon to condense the hierarchy into a single panel showing only the hierarchy heading.

  • In this collapsed view, items cannot be selected.

4

Expand the Hierarchy

  • Click the expand icon to unfold the hierarchy.

  • All hierarchy levels are displayed as separate panels, where items can be selected.

Group Filters Using Custom Hierarchies:

Hierarchy grouping in Power BI allows users to combine related fields from a dimension table, making filters more organized and easier to navigate. With expand/collapse options in Super Filter, it enhances usability while saving valuable space on the report canvas.

1

Create a Custom Hierarchy:

Build a custom hierarchy by grouping columns from tables based on your requirements.

2

Add to Category Section:

Add the custom hierarchy to the Category section of the visual.

3

The added hierarchy will be shown as group of filters in the visual which can be expanded and collapsed.
